ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mary, a retired art teacher, now dedicates her time to painting and works professionally as an artist. Her artwork is about her life’s journey in abstract form. Her paintings are landscapes of the inner life, where memory, nature, and faith dissolve into shifting fields of color and light. Mary’s process is a combination of conscious intention and subconscious discovery. She is inspired by nature, family, significant events, and sometimes a combined mixture of these.

“Often, it is only after the work is complete that I fully understand what has emerged through the painting process onto a surface.”

Mary’s diverse portfolio of works include a variety of different methods, mediums such as watercolor, acrylic, oil and printmaking, on a variety of surfaces from canvas to paper to wood panels. Most of her work is two dimensional, but she also has a series of pieces that she calls “relief sculptures”. These sculptures are uniquely created with shaped paper mounted to a surface or shaped canvas that is mounted to a two-dimensional surface. Mary’s heartfelt desire is to create connections with those who follow her artwork.

“I hope to create an emotional connection with the viewers and invite them to reflect on their own experiences and emotions.”

Mary has been involved with many organizations over the years, both locally and internationally. Her philosophy centers on building community among diverse groups of people so that everyone feels welcomed and included. She believes art is a universal language that connects people through shared visual experiences and enjoyment. Mary especially values environments where artists and art come together to inspire connection, creativity, and meaningful experiences. Two of her favorite places she has exhibited include New York City and Istanbul, Turkey.
